How high are the rents in Hamburg?

In terms of living costs, Hamburg is the sixth most expensive city in Germany. In an international comparison, the German capital is 28.1 percent cheaper than New York City (without rent).

Taking into account the rental prices (Cost of Living Index Plus Rent Index), the Hanseatic city is even 47.9 percent cheaper than the US metropolis. In a national comparison, Hamburg also ranks sixth in terms of cost of living plus rents – behind Munich, Berlin, Darmstadt, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.

According to Numbeo – as of May 3, 2023 – the rental prices for a single household are as follows: 999.06 euros for an apartment in the city center and 754.81 euros for an apartment outside the center. For a family of four: 1,876.52 euros in the city center and 1,399.76 euros outside the center.
