After Musk’s takeover, alternative Mastodon ‘explodes’
Mastodon is a Twitter, but different. The platform benefits from all the commotion about Twitter and continues to grow.
Musk is a big proponent of ‘free speech’, but many people don’t know what this will mean for Twitter. But one alternative to the platform is already booming as a result of the news. Mastodon, the open-source social media service that bills itself as the “largest decentralized social network on the Internet,” has been “exploding” since its acquisition of Musk, according to its founder.
Alternative Mastodon
Users, but also employees, do not know where they stand at the moment. This is because Musk has indicated that he plans to take a much more hands-off approach to content moderation. Users have started to complain en masse, on Twitter of course. But they also threaten to leave the platform.
That’s where Mastadon comes in, this is seen as a reasonable alternative. Hours after the Twitter acquisition was announced, Mastodon said it has “an influx of about 41,287 users.” Of those, about 30,000 were new users, Mastodon founder Eugen Rochko wrote in a blog post.

The platform was founded because years ago Twitter was also prey to a billionaire. “Funnily enough, it was one of the reasons I started looking at the decentralized social media space in 2016. What eventually led me to create Mastodon, rumors that Twitter, the platform I had been a daily user for years at the time, could be sold to another controversial billionaire,” the founder wrote.
We also see an increase in users in the stores. According to the analytics firm Sensor Tower, the apps have been downloaded much more frequently in the last few days. The app is currently at number 32 in the App Store charts for social media apps.
