Under duress

The report, which investigated the adoption of children between 1967 and 1998, revealed major abuses. Documents were forged, parents had to give up their children forcibly or for payment and birth mothers were abused. Even now the system is prone to fraud.

‘Painful’

The Dutch government was already aware of these problems in the late 1960s, but, according to Dekker, has looked away from them for years. He believes that a new cabinet should consider the question of how adopting from abroad can be properly restarted. “I realize that this has major consequences for people who have already started the adoption process or are considering adoption,” says Dekker about the suspension of the procedures. “It’s painful for some people, but let’s not lose sight of the reason.”
