The first generation of chipsets has not met with much success

When Apple introduced its Apple M1 ARM processor last fall, it caused a huge stir in the computer market. The first reason is that all of her Macbooks running Mac OS will now use ARM technology, as will iPhones and iPads. The second reason is the performance of the Apple M1 processor, which surpasses not only other ARM chipsets on the market, but also a number of full-featured x86 processors.

However, Apple is not the first to bring support for ARM technology for its desktop system. Even before that, the American software giant Microsoft did so on Windows 10. Qualcomm subsequently released two generations of chipsets for laptops with this system. Snapdragon 8cx. It was used, for example, by the convertible tablet Microsoft Surface Pro X. Nevertheless, such devices have not met with great success.

This is mainly due to the fact that the market is still dominated by Windows laptops with x86 processors. While support for Windows programs is low with ARM technology, x86 technology is supported by all. The customer prefers to choose a better supported processor. In the case of Macbooks, however, he will no longer have a choice and the creators of programs for Mac OS will be forced to adapt them for ARM technology. The second reason for lack of interest is the poorer performance of the Snapdragon 8cx chipset.

The new chipset will be larger than its predecessor

This should be solved by the Qualcomm Snapdragon SC8280 chipset, whose official name may change until the performance. The chipset was revealed in the Qualcomm database by a German portal WinFuture. He claims that the Snapdragon SC8280 has a size of 20 × 17 millimeters, which is more than the size of its predecessor 20 × 15 millimeters. As a result, the new chipset can have more than 8 cores. However, no details are yet known about the microarchitecture of its CPU cores.

The portal does not even know the maximum speeds of the cores and how they are grouped. It can only speculate whether the new chipset will have an ARM Cortex-X1 core for a high-performance cluster, or it will primarily use the new ARM Cortex-A78C. However, during internal testing, the chipset was tested in conjunction with 8 GB LPPDR5 RAM and also 32 GB LPDDR4X RAM. This shows that the chipset could have a basic as well as a more powerful version. The 5G Snapdragon X55 modem was also used in the test.
