The Apple Watch Series 9 would have a new processor based on the A15 chip
Performance improvements are to be expected with the Apple Watch Series 9. The new watch is expected to feature a new processor according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who evoked the topic on Discord.
As a reminder, the Apple Watch Series 8 has the same processor as the Apple Watch Series 7… which itself had the same processor as the Apple Watch Series 6. So there are no performance improvements since a few generations. That should change this year.
The Apple Watch Series 9 would be entitled to a new processor based on Apple’s A15 chip. This is the chip found in the various iPhone 13s, as well as the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (the Pro models have the A16 chip).
Gurman doesn’t give many details, just saying it will be a new processor and not a previous generation model that Apple is modifying to pass it off as a new chip.
Thanks to the new chip, the Apple Watch Series 9 could be faster in general navigation and for using apps, which would translate into faster charging times and potentially better battery life. The new chip could also help power some of the features Apple plans to launch with watchOS 10. If rumors are to be believed, Apple is working on an overhaul of the watchOS interface with a focus on a new widgets.
The Apple Watch Series 9 should therefore be more powerful, but we should not expect any particular change in terms of the general design of the watch.
