Lost Patience: “Mommy Kick Me!”
Patience is a virtue and everything is a phase. Yet with children it is sometimes very difficult to always stay zen.
Ronja (35) is divorced and co-parents Anouk (8) and Benja (5).
“Benja has always been a poison frog, but the divorce did not bother him. We were just moving into our new house when he began throwing tantrums more and more. Usually I just let him rant, but this time he was lying on the floor in the living room when I walked past in my socks and he kicked me painfully in the shin in his uncontrolled rage. “Is it done now?” I screamed, and without thinking I tapped him with my toes against his ribs. Then Benja started to scream even louder. “You kick me!” he yelled. “Mommy kick me!”
My mother kicked me
It was really soft, more like a little poke, but I was shocked. If this was a rash reflex, what could happen if I got really angry? I collapsed on the floor next to him, crying. ‘Mom didn’t kick, but do you understand that sometimes I don’t remember when you’re so angry? And I was shocked, you hurt me,’ I said. Then he fell sobbing into my arms.
“It was really soft, more like a little poke, but I was shocked”
Since then, Benja has been yelling at anyone who wants to hear that his mother kicked him in the ribs. Embarrassing is an understatement. So, just to be on the safe side, I informed the teacher and a few mother friends about my action. I don’t want anyone to freak out if I lose my temper again.”
