Director Sarah Polley receives letter to return her Oscar (April 1)
If you have just won your very first Oscar, you will receive a letter that you must return the coveted statuette. This happened to Canadian director Sarah Polley on, yes, April 1. One of her children was behind the prank.
Mistake, thanks
In the letter that Sarah shares on Twitter, it can be read that something went wrong during the ceremony. She can therefore enjoy the Oscar she received for another week Women Talking, but then have to return the figurine. The price was for All Quiet on the Western Front. According to the letter writer, that film also has the most right to the award. Autch.
The neatly typed letter also states that the organization of the Oscar ceremony noticed that things were going wrong when the winner was announced. The letter writer was well versed. No action was taken because a new La LaLandblunder would cause too much controversy and “probably make the people of Toronto very angry”. In 2017 it became La La Land namely, incorrectly named as the winner of the Best Picture category, when the award was actually for Moonlight was intended.
‘Sincere apologies
The letter writer also indicates that it is really not an April Fool’s joke. “This is far too cruel to be a joke. Therefore, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused you.”

On Twitter, Sarah received a lot of reactions to her 11-year-old daughter’s prank. Fair is fair: it’s something different than salt in the sugar bowl, cling film over the toilet seat or moving the clock an hour (or two). Coming up with it should almost, well, get an Oscar.
