this is why updating is extremely important

iOS 16.3.1 is available since February 13. If you haven’t installed the update yet, it’s more than a good idea to do so soon. In this article we explain why it is even extremely important.

Read on after the ad.

Extremely important update

Although the update to iOS 16.3.1 does not bring any new functions to your iPhone, it does contain a number of important security updates. These were previously described on Apple’s website, but the site has now suddenly been updated. And it turns out that there are even more dangerous ones exploits (security vulnerabilities) have been fixed with the latest iOS update.

Even more security updates

One of the new exploits Apple fixed with the iOS 16.3.1 update relates to a “maliciously crafted certificate” that can lead to a DoS (denial of service) attack when the iPhone or iPad is flooded with data to cause a crash. Apple indicates that this DoS issue has been resolved with “enhanced controls.”

The website has been further updated with three more new exploits that have been fixed with the latest update. One such exploit was found in the system’s Crash Reporter, which allowed attackers to read arbitrary files as root.

Two other Kernel-related exploits could allow attackers to execute arbitrary code on the iPhone or iPad with elevated privileges. In this way the sand box of an app can be easily bypassed.

Update to iOS 16.3.1

It’s unclear why Apple didn’t mention these vulnerabilities earlier on the website. But most importantly, of course, they have now been resolved in iOS 16.3.1. So if you haven’t installed the update yet, it’s extremely important to do so soon!

With the updates macOS 13.2.1 and iOS 16.3.1, Apple also solved an exploit in the Safari web browser engine, which was already being actively abused.
