After many tests, Netflix is now going to tackle account sharing outside their own family. It seems that subscribers who do this will have to face the consequences from March.
Many people save on their monthly costs by piggybacking on other people’s Netflix subscriptions. Even half of Androidworld readers share their login details with their neighbour, mother and/or best friends. And almost half of readers even cancel Netflix if there is a surcharge on account sharing.

From the beginning of 2023, Netflix wants to change this, the streaming service indicated last year. Subscribers who from that period still share their Netflix account with members outside the family would in fact have two options: pay extra or migrate. Now we see more details on this in Netflix’s quarterly figures (via IGN). These subscribers will have to make a choice from March. Whether this choice will immediately be implemented in all countries where Netflix is available is not known.
Pay extra or migrate
With the option ‘pay extra’ you can create sub-accounts for extra members outside the family. You pay a surcharge for this. Netflix has previously tested this system in South America. Users had to pay about 2 euros extra for this per account. With the option ‘migrate’ you use the new Transfer Profile function. You can take all your data with you to a new Netflix subscription. So you won’t lose your viewing history, My list, saved games and other settings.
The company expects modest growth as a result of this step. Still, the streaming service gained far more new subscribers in the fourth quarter of last year than the company expected. That reports the NOS. Netflix added 7.7 million customers between October and the end of December. In total, the company had 231 million subscribers at the end of last year.
