Deutsche Post is now delivering parcels by solar ship
Deutsche Post is now using a solar ship to deliver parcels in Berlin. In this way, the company wants to transport hundreds of shipments every day without emissions on the waterways of the capital.
Sustainability plays a major role for many companies these days – including them German postal service. A solar ship should now help to transport shipments emission-free and environmentally friendly.
The logistics company therefore wants to deliver hundreds of packages a day on the waterways in Berlin with immediate effect. The electrically powered ship will commute back and forth on the Spree between the southern port of Spandau and the western port.
This is Deutsche Post’s solar ship
The solar ship is 10.50 meters long and 2.50 meters wide. There is a photovoltaic system on its roof, which provides the drive and supplies the barge with energy. Batteries are used to store energy so that the ship can move forward without the sun.
With a drive power of five kilowatts, Deutsche Post’s solar ship reaches a total of twelve kilometers per hour. As long as the sun is shining, the boat can deliver packages indefinitely. If the freighter runs on battery power, it is operational for between six and eight hours.
The fleet should grow
Deutsche Post owes the fact that the solar ship is now on its way on the Spree to a cooperation with the Berlin port and storage company Behala and the shipping company Solarwaterworld AG.
With the use of the solar-powered ship, the DHL Group wants to advance its sustainability strategy. So far, the company has mainly invested in vehicles on land. In addition to electric cargo bikes, e-trikes and e-bikes are also used to transport packages.
The solar ship now complements this offer as another regional project for the capital, explains Chief Production Officer Thomas Schneider, who is responsible for Deutsche Post’s mail and parcel operations in Germany.
In addition, with the help of the solar ship, we are analyzing how we can use water transport for ourselves in the future.
If the solar ship is successful in test operation, the company wants to examine the extent to which a fleet can be expanded. In addition, Deutsche Post could then expand its transport routes from Spandau via the Westhafen to Neukölln and Mariendorf.
