Scandalous! Netflix with ads is getting so expensive
Netflix is going to offer a ‘cheaper’ subscription with advertising. But this subscription is not going to be very cheap…
Read on after the ad.
Officially confirmed: subscription with advertising
It is not very surprising; the arrival of a cheaper Netflix subscription with advertising. The well-known streaming giant has not been doing so well for a while. Now it is becoming clear that Netflix plans to charge between $7 and $9 for an advertising subscription. At least that’s what a new report from Bloomberg says.
So what’s so outrageous about it? Netflix’s current lowest-priced no-ads subscription is $9.99 per month. This gives you an image quality of 480p. We think that the (intended) advertising subscription of Netflix is relatively too expensive.
In the Netherlands, the cheapest Netflix subscription costs 7.99 euros per month. It is not yet known what the prices in euros are for a Netflix subscription with advertising. It is also still unclear whether and when this subscription will come to the Netherlands.
This is (not) included in a Netflix advertising subscription
Netflix has now confirmed the subscription. Netflix’s cheaper ad model is aimed at those who don’t mind commercials and find $10 too expensive for unlimited TV shows and movies. Netflix reports that the ads will be shown before and while watching TV shows and movies.
These pass about every hour and last just under four minutes. For comparison; on your TV you see 10 to 20 minutes of advertising per hour. You can’t skip these commercials on Netflix. Fortunately, Netflix also thinks along with you. The company is going to make sure that ads are not too repetitive.
Unfortunately, there are also a number of other limitations. For example, with a Netflix ads subscription, you can’t download TV shows and movies to watch offline. Also, the Netflix Originals are not available. These are the Netflix series and movies that she produced herself, such as Stranger Things.
Why Netflix is going to introduce advertising
The streaming service has not been doing so well for some time. Netflix lost subscribers for the first time in 10 years in Q1 2022. In total, this concerns a loss of almost 1 million paying users. The company mainly blamed account sharing and hopes to solve this with a cheaper (advertising) subscription. Netflix has already become more expensive to absorb the losses.
In addition, competition is of course a major instigator of this downward spiral. Netflix aims to introduce the ad subscription before the end of the year. We hope that the red streaming service will take a look at the price, because we are certainly not going to put down a tenner and then see advertisements.
