The forgotten smartphone: Huawei Ascend P7

An elegant design, packed with specs and sneaky some cut-and-paste of an iPhone. We saw it again with the high-end models from the Huawei Ascend series. Today in ‘The forgotten smartphone’ we discuss the Huawei Ascend P7.

Remember those years when Huawei released device by device, and always managed to impress with every device? That time is unfortunately behind us. But we like to look back. With today the Huawei Ascend P7. What did this device have to offer? We discuss it in ‘The forgotten smartphone’. This phone appeared as a successor to the previously discussed Huawei Ascend P6 and hit the market in 2014, the same year that DroidApp was founded!

We discussed the Huawei Ascend P7 extensively in the Huawei Ascend P7 review that year. Just like with its predecessor, we saw some similarities as for example with the iPhone. Not very crazy; with the Ascend P6 the company managed to score very well; the brand wanted to achieve that success again with the P7. The brand has succeeded in that.

For an amount of 450 euros, which later dropped to under 300 euros, you got a well-equipped smartphone with a 5.0 inch Full HD screen and with a thickness of only 6.5 millimeters, the device weighed only 124 grams. Huawei supplied the Ascend P6 with a Kirin 910T quad-core processor and it came with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. This could be expanded with a memory card.

In terms of photography, the Huawei Ascend P7 was there with a 13 megapixel main camera. We also saw an 8MP front-facing camera. The 2500 mAh battery was located under the metal housing of the Huawei and lasted 2-2.5 days with average use. A little more about the camera; this one didn’t always deliver great photos. The results were often inconsistent, while those of the P6 were very good. Nice detail, here you will find the photo album we made with pictures of the Ascend P7. There were also some special applications on the phone from the factory. One of these was the mirror, which uses the front camera. When you touched the screen in a certain way, a (virtual) crack appeared in the screen. You could also use the magnifying glass, where the camera was used. However, the focus was not nicely focused, so you didn’t have much use for it.

NFC tags were also included with the Huawei Ascend P7. This allowed you to adjust certain settings to perform certain actions. Remember to turn on the WiFi when you scanned the tag. The smartphone came on the market with Android 4.4.2 KitKat, which of course included the EMUI interface. Later followed the update to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. An update to Marshmallow was not in it for the device.
