‘Finally I had given the teacher something appropriate, I thought’
Every month a mother tells about the moment in motherhood when things went horribly wrong.
Joan (50), relationship with Dennis (49), mother of Logan (10).
“Oh no!’ I screamed when I saw my father unpack his Father’s Day present and he held up a red notebook in some surprise. This couldn’t be true. My father looked at me questioningly. What was so bad? “You got the wrong present!” I exclaimed. “This was for Logan’s teacher!”
gifts
The annual Teachers and Masters Day also fell exactly in the week of Father’s Day. Usually I found out the night before and had to dig through my pantry for something chocolatey. This time I was fortunately on time and I could buy something appropriate. At the bookstore I bought beautiful leather notebooks for Logan’s teacher (they have a job sharing). One with a black cover for him, the red version for her.
While I was there, I also bought a present for my father: a biography about Rob Rensenbrink, a seventies football player. Not well known to the general public, but my father linked up with him through a mutual friend. He would be very pleased with it, I expected. I had everything festively packed.

lukewarm response
Wednesday was Teacher’s Day and Logan took his gifts with him. Afterwards I inquired with him how it had been received. “Good, I guess,” he said. She hadn’t said anything. I completely understood that somewhat lukewarm response on Sunday.
Not only did I find it very silly that I had mixed up the presents, it also meant that my son had given his teacher a football biography four days before. And not even from a well-known player like Cruijff or Messi, but from the top scorer of Club Brugge. Of course the poor teacher had no idea how to react.
“From now on I pay extra attention when giving presents”
I could have fallen through the ground. I immediately sent her an apology message. Logan let me take the real present the following week. From now on I pay extra attention when giving presents.”
