iPadOS 15 Multitasking: Here’s What’s New

As iPads become more powerful and versatile, it is also becoming more important to be able to use multiple apps side by side effortlessly. For years, the iPad has supported this with various multitasking functions. With iPadOS 15, Apple is pushing this system into the next gear.

1. A new design

Multitasking takes center stage in iPadOS 15, in the form of three small dots in the top edge of the screen. As soon as you tap on this, a window will appear with the options for multitasking. In it you choose full screen, Slide Over, Split View or Center Window, depending on the app you use.

With Slide Over you put an app ‘over’ the screen of another app, while with Split View you split the screen of your iPad in two. If you have chosen one of these options, the app you used will move up for a while, so that you can choose the app with which you want to multitask from your home screen.

2. Center Window

Center Window is a new way to use multiple apps on your iPad from iPadOS 15. As the name suggests, it puts a note or message in the center of your screen. This is superimposed on your active apps.

This is useful, for example, if you have mail open on the left half of your screen, but the window is too narrow to read an email properly. With Center Window you can make this message big, without leaving multitasking. When you have finished reading, you can return to where you left off with a touch of the screen.

3. View all open windows

For example, are you working on multiple documents in Pages? Then the new ‘Shelf’ of iPadOS 15 comes in handy. This bookshelf contains all your open windows of an app, which you can easily switch between. You can also add new windows to this new overview or close them immediately to keep things organized.

4. Multitasking in the App Switcher

In the App Switcher you have been able to see all your active apps on your iPad and iPhone for years. As of iPadOS 15, you can also view your multitasking windows here and create one directly by dragging two apps together.

That way you can switch between multiple windows of apps more easily, without having to make the right multitasking combinations over and over. This will certainly be a significant improvement for people who use their iPad intensively.

5. Keyboard Combinations

Thanks to mouse and trackpad support, more and more people are using their iPad along with a keyboard. Good news, then, that we get a number of important new keyboard combinations from iPadOS 15. By holding down the CMD button, a window appears with all available combinations, which also allow you to control multitasking.

6.Quick Note

While it’s not officially a multitasking feature, we’re also counting the new Quick Note. Quick Note lets you quickly create a note while using another app. You do this by pressing a key combination from the Control Center or by dragging from an angle with your finger or Apple Pencil.

Quick Notes allows you to quickly take notes, collect links, or process information. These are then collected in the Notes app in a new overview.
