5x great walking routes in Utrecht

Hiking route Haarzuilens Estate

You will find the Haarzuilens estate on the outskirts of the city of Utrecht. It consists of Castle de Haar – certainly worth a visit – and the associated lands. During a nice walk (11 km) through the area you will discover the many animals and plants on the estate. How many hares can you spot, for example, that can be found here all year round?

Prefer a shorter walk? This route is only three kilometers long.

Highest point Utrechtse Heuvelrug

It doesn’t really matter where you go for a walk in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park, because the forest is beautiful everywhere. One of the many routes is that to the highest point of the park: the Amerongse Kop. Along the way you will come across a reconstructed burial mound, as they built in this region in the Bronze Age.

The route is eight kilometers long and it takes about two hours.

Here you will find more information.

Experience route Play forest Nieuw Wulven

Are your children still small and looking for a short walk? Near Houten you will find Speelbos Nieuw Wulven. To get there you walk less than a kilometer through the forest.

Don’t forget to download the play forest animal guide, so your child can learn all about the animals that live in the forest, such as the hare and grass snake along the way. Once in the Speelbos they can enjoy themselves on the playground equipment and car tires.

Liniepad walking route

On the west side of the province of Utrecht you will find the Stelling van Amsterdam: dikes with dams and locks and no fewer than forty-six fortresses. This historic fortification is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the walk on the Liniepad (10 km) you walk past a number of those forts and you have a beautiful view over the wide landscape with water and mills. Also handy: the starting point is Abcoude station, so a great family outing by train.

Here you will find more information about the route.

Cape Forests walking route

One of our favorites. You walk through the beautiful Kaapse Bossen, where there is plenty to do for children. For example, take a look at the Doornse Kei (an object from the last Ice Age) or climb the watchtower to peek high above the trees.

The distance is also easy for children to do, because the walk is about five kilometers long.
