Charging iPhone correctly: the five best tips
You have probably noticed this with your previous smartphones: the battery of your smartphone gets worse and worse over time. Just after purchase, your iPhone will easily last more than a day. After a few years, however, that is no longer possible and you have a power bank to last all day.
Part of this has to do with using your iPhone. The more apps and notifications, the more often the battery has to supply power, and the faster it wears out. In addition, the battery in your iPhone also loses some of its power over time. Lithium-ion batteries have a lifespan of three to five years. In reality, this amounts to about a thousand charging times.
So does your battery get worse over time? Actually yes. Your battery is in worse shape by charging it a lot. However, we managed to isolate three factors that have the greatest impact on the health of lithium-ion batteries: the number of charges, the heat in the environment and the age of the battery.
With these 5 tips you can charge your iPhone ‘correctly’
There is no ultimate way of charging so that the battery of your iPhone lasts super long. All batteries will deteriorate over time. Yet you can do something about it and with these five tips you can keep the battery of your iPhone as long as possible.
1. Buy an Apple-certified charger
It is always a good idea if you only charge the iPhone with an official Apple-certified charger and Lightning cable. That is why we advise you to ignore all cheaper chargers. These do not meet Apple’s quality requirements and often fluctuate in power supply. That is not good for the condition of your battery.
This also applies to wireless charging. Therefore choose chargers with Magsafe or Qi certification. Are you curious about these chargers? We have already selected a good ‘normal’ charger and an excellent wireless charger for you.
2. Enable Apple’s Optimized Charging
With iOS 13, Apple introduced ‘optimized charging’. This feature helps to extend iPhone battery life. This function does this by limiting charging to 80 percent. Based on your iPhone usage, the function recognizes when you use it (for example, when you usually wake up) and charges the iPhone to 100% just in time.
The last part, from 90 to 100 percent, puts a lot of strain on the battery and the iPhone wears out faster as a result. With ‘optimized charging’ the battery does not always reach its maximum. The function is activated by default. To check that, go to ‘Settings’, then tap ‘Battery’. Under the heading ‘Battery status’ you will find the option ‘optimized charging’. Check if it is green.
3. Keep your iPhone’s battery at a certain level
It’s a good idea to keep your iPhone’s battery level between 20 and 90 percent. Also, your iPhone should actually only charge when half of your battery is empty.
It is not disastrous to fully charge your iPhone. But if you can, you should try to avoid it. Every time you do that, the battery ages a little. In addition, you should prevent your battery from dropping below 20 percent.
It’s okay if you drop below 20 percent a few times, but if you do it too often you will notice. So the rule of thumb to properly charge your iPhone: keep the battery charge between 20 and 90 percent as much as possible.
4. Spread your charging sessions throughout the day
This tip is related to the previous tip and you probably didn’t see it coming: charge your iPhone a little a few times a day instead of once completely. This prevents you from accidentally charging above 90 percent.
5. Make sure your iPhone is at the right temperature (with fast charging)
Are you a fan of fast charging? Good news! This is not necessarily harmful to your iPhone. There is, however, a catch. If you use this function in a too hot (or cold) environment, it is detrimental to your battery.
The lithium-ion battery in your iPhone works best in a constant room temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius. With fast charging, you should therefore mainly be careful that your iPhone is not extremely hot or cold for a long time.
