What CarPlay lacks
With CarPlay, Apple offers an excellent iOS in-car experience. The apps you really need while driving are there, in a minimal interface so you don’t get distracted. Read more about what we think of CarPlay in 2021 in our CarPlay review update. Still, there is always room for improvement. That is why we list the features that we are still missing.
1. CarPlay on your iPhone
Instead of using Apple CarPlay, many people choose to put their iPhone in a holder. Logical, because your car must support CarPlay or you must connect an external screen. That costs money. But an iPhone in the holder also has many disadvantages compared to Apple CarPlay.
A solution would be to be able to activate CarPlay on your iPhone as well. Then you still place your iPhone in a holder, but you get the minimalist CarPlay interface. That is much safer.
2. Add “Find My”
It would be very useful to add Find My to CarPlay. This way you can easily see the location of your friends on the map, or share your own location. That way you know well whether you have to hurry up, or whether you can just as well take it easy.
3. More apps
The main way to increase the capabilities of Apple CarPlay is to support more apps. Of course, it is always necessary to consider whether an app is really essential for use on the go, but there are some categories that would add a lot to the ease of use on the road.
Think more weather apps. The range of weather apps with CarPlay is bizarre low, while it can be nice to place a map with the rain nearby on the screen. Apps with which charging points can be found would also be ideal, now that we drive more and more electrically.
Better Siri
It is not really a new function, but something that CarPlay can improve considerably: Siri. The voice assistant is essential for CarPlay as you can control everything without looking at your screen. Although the Dutch version of the speech assistant has improved considerably in recent years, it still leaves a lot of stitches. You don’t want that if you want to keep the focus on driving.
5. carOS
Chances are that Apple has long been working on the next step: carOS. A complete control system for the car. Google has already made this step with Android Automotive, so it’s now up to Apple.
With the ongoing rumors of an Apple car, the arrival of carOS seems only a matter of time. Then the possibilities are expanded much further. Like that you can ask Siri to regulate the temperature or open the windows. We would like that now, but that is simply not possible.
