4 great new features announced at Google I / O

Maps from Maps will soon contain much more information and will also be clearer. Google is going to show you details about sidewalk crossings and more. You also get more information about busy areas in the city. We provide an overview of the new features that will be available in the coming months.

1. Focus on Live View

During the Google I / O event, Google made it clear that it will focus on its Live View feature in Maps. On the home screen of Maps, there is a ‘Live’ button that allows you to look around you using your phone’s camera. It’s an augmented reality feature that also works in conjunction with navigation.

From now on you will see the name of relevant places around you in Live View on the screen. If you tap on a place, you will get relevant information such as the name of that place, the review score, opening hours and information about the crowds. If you press the pop-up again, you will see all the details about that place.

2. Detailed maps

In August of last year, it became known that Google Maps is working on a new and detailed look of maps. In addition to the usual street map, you also get the display of footpaths, pedestrian crossings and traffic lights. The proportions between sidewalks and motorways are also correct. Google says those detailed maps are now available in 50 new cities worldwide.

3. Busy places

Do you want to jog in the city or take a leisurely stroll? Soon, Maps will show you at a glance which areas are busier than normal. Areas are then marked in color, and in text you can read how busy it is. Thanks to this function, you immediately know which parts of the city you want to avoid. On the other hand, this feature can also be useful for travelers to discover the most vibrant places in a city.

4. Information in Maps based on time

If you zoom in on maps in Maps, you can find useful places and catering establishments. You can see the name and type of place on the basis of a pin. In busy places in the city you cannot see all the pins on the screen at the same time, and Google will now use a system to determine which places appear on your screen.

That depends on the time of day. In the morning, for example, you are more likely to see coffee shops than places to dine extensively. Of course you can also find restaurants in Maps in the morning, because then you just have to zoom in even more on the location of the business in question.

Google also announced that it pays a lot of attention to safety in Maps’ navigation. You can read all about it here. What do you think of the novelties of Maps. Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
