Protect privacy on WhatsApp
Do you share all your messages, photos and videos via WhatsApp? Then it is important to properly protect your privacy on WhatsApp. You can decide for yourself who can call you, whether your notifications are visible and who can view your backup. It is therefore smart to check once in a while whether you have set the right functions.

1. Silence unknown numbers
Do you often receive calls from numbers that are not in your contact list? WhatsApp has come up with a solution for this, because with a new function calls from unknown people are automatically silenced. For example, your number is less sensitive to unwanted advertising calls and your privacy on WhatsApp is better protected.
With the new function, your iPhone will no longer ring when you receive a call from an unknown number. The call will appear in the Calls list, you will then receive a notification as soon as you have missed the call. You can silence unknown numbers by going to ‘Settings > Privacy > Calls’ in WhatsApp. Then choose ‘Keep unknown callers silent’.
2. Hide your notifications from WhatsApp
It is useful that you can already read the messages you receive on WhatsApp on your home screen, but you prefer to keep some notifications private. If you don’t want everyone to read your WhatsApp notifications, it is also possible to hide the content of the notifications. You will then only see from which contact or in which group conversation you receive a message, but not what is in that message.

You can hide your notifications by opening ‘Settings > Notifications’ in WhatsApp. Turn off ‘Show preview’ to hide the content of the notifications. This way you prevent someone from reading all your messages, for example if your iPhone is left unattended on the table.
3. Secure your backup
WhatsApp has set all chats to be automatically secured with end-to-end encryption. This means that WhatsApp itself cannot view the content of the messages, so that your privacy is guaranteed. This does not (yet) automatically apply to the backup that you can make of your conversations. When you make a backup, your chats will still be visible to WhatsApp and Apple.
Fortunately, WhatsApp also gives you the option to manually enable end-to-end encryption for your backup. That means that only you can access the backup, even WhatsApp and Apple can no longer access the contents of the backup. This way you can be sure that the conversations on WhatsApp are really well secured.
How to set up end-to-end encryption with the backup:
- Open WhatsApp;
- Go to Settings’;
- Tap on ‘Chats > Backup chats’;
- Go to ‘End-to-end encrypted backup’;
- Select ‘Enable’.
4. Finally, do a privacy check
Finally, it is wise to check once in a while which privacy settings you have selected on WhatsApp. With Privacy Control you can now find all this information in one overview. This way you can see who can contact you, which personal data is visible and which information is visible from you in the chat.

You can find the Privacy check in WhatsApp under ‘Settings > Privacy’. The control is shown there as a notification at the top of the list. If you then tap the Privacy Control, you will see a menu with all of WhatsApp’s privacy settings. This way you can easily see how well your privacy is protected and you can immediately adjust certain settings if necessary.
