Busy at Schiphol? With these apps you will survive

It is screamingly busy at Schiphol. This is very annoying, because many people have to wait for hours or even miss their flight. Fortunately, there are a few apps that can help you limit your travel frustration. iPhoned list them for you in this article.

1. Schiphol Amsterdam Airport

The official Schiphol app is essential to make your flight journey as smooth as possible. You can easily keep an eye on the crowds with this. You can also see exactly what time you need to be present, but also the exact departure hall, check-in desk and gate that you need for your trip. And with the built-in map, you can find out exactly where you need to be in advance, so you can walk purposefully.

With the timeline (left) you can see exactly what your hours at Schiphol look like.

Also handy: if you enable notifications when you first open the app on your iPhone, you will be automatically informed if something changes around your flight. And you can get a discount voucher of 5 euros in the app, which you can spend at Schiphol – when you finally get through security, that is.

2. NS

The advice is to travel to the airport by train, instead of by car. That is why the NS app is also important for your journey. Enter your trip in advance, and keep track of any changes with the built-in notifications. You also immediately see which trains are extra busy, so that you can avoid them. This way you have enough space for your suitcase!

Schiphol tips
With the NS app you can see at a glance which trains you should avoid.

A tip from us: if you tap ‘More’ when a train ride is displayed, you can already see on which side you have to get off. This way you are the first to complete the sprint to the conveyor belt. This is especially useful if you know that the crowds at Schiphol or on the train peak at that time.

3. Google Maps

Google Maps keeps track of how busy it is at certain locations – including Schiphol. The app does this on the basis of users’ phones, which allows Google to see whether the number of people is above or below the average for that day and time.

Schiphol waiting time
The live crowds of Google Maps are constantly updated.

You view the crowds at Schiphol in Google Maps by searching for Schiphol in the app, dragging the result up, and then scrolling through. You can also see the expected crowds per day, so that you know what time you do not want to be there. You do this by tapping the day behind ‘Popular times’ and selecting another day.
